serve

“Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant… For even the son of man did not come to be served but to serve and give his life for many.”

Mark 10:43-45 NIV

To pursue the kingdom of God is to accept the invitation of service.

Up until the crucifixion, the disciples seemed to be under the impression that following Christ was leading them to fame and fortune. They were constantly asking Him questions about who would get to sit next to Him in His glory, and who will be considered first in the kingdom. Yet, Jesus’ example teaches us that abundant life is found in sacrificial love and service.

Consider the poor widow in Mark 12— many rich people were coming through the temple to give money to the treasury, and yet, Jesus recognized the poor widow who gave out of her lack. “They gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” (Mk 12: 43-44)

Anyone can give out of much. It’s easy to love those we love and forgive those we care about. Quite painless to give when it’s not going to cost us anything. But when that love stretches us, or when that gift forces us to step out on faith— that’s when we become more like Christ. God doesn’t give us leftovers. He gave us everything when He sent His only son to die for our sins and set us free.

Are we willing to go beyond our own comforts in return?

People tend to define greatness in terms of power and prestige. But to be great in the eyes of Jesus is to deny a life centered around materialistic goals and selfishness, and spend ones life on the betterment of others. As he came to serve, we also are called to be servants of faith and love demonstrating his life and values to the world.
