“Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:41-42 NIV
Devotion is our highest priority to Jesus.
How many of us are riddled with distraction the moment we enter our day? Our thoughts are racing, there’s much to get done and we can’t seem to get centered around the Word or God’s presence.
Now imagine you’re preparing your home, cooking, cleaning and in walks Jesus. You kindly greet him, ask him to have a seat and then you continue on with the preparations. Do you ever feel so consumed with your plans and agenda that you forget to slow down and enjoy the presence of God?
Martha’s heart was bent towards service. Her intentions of course were hospitable and kind, running around making sure everything was perfect for Jesus. She loved him, and she trusted him, but she was missing the greater purpose. In this particular moment, Jesus gently reminded Martha that no matter what was on the agenda for the day— her devotion was most important.
Mary’s heart was bent towards worship. The moment Jesus walked into the room, she fell to his feet enamored with his presence. Jesus said she had chosen what was better— close fellowship with the Lord.
Obsessively worrying over our earthly pursuits is incomparable to the presence of our Savior. Our good works are to be an overflow of our love for Jesus stemming from a personal relationship with Him.
Listen for his songs of delight over you. Feel his hands of hope holding your heart. Let us not become so caught up in “doing things for God” that we neglect to hear from him and remember what he has done for us.
May we be people who choose what is better over anything in this world.
