“Then the church enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.”
Acts 9:31 NIV
Living in the fear of God produces peace and strength.
Being God-fearing is not a mere “fear” of God, but rather a desire to live according to His ways, acknowledge His good intentions and bring our lives under His sovereignty. It motivates us to live in awe and reverence of the Holy God out of our knowledge of Him, love towards Him and trust in Him.
Practically, it is avoiding circumstances that are not of God, loving what God loves, hating what He hates—otherwise, we risk quenching the Spirit (1 Thess 5:19).
According to Proverbs 9:10, the fear of the Lord leads to wisdom. When our whole lives are committed to God, the Holy Spirit changes our spiritual attitude empowering us to do what God has called us to do.
Is there anything in your life quenching the Spirit? What is distracting you or weighing you down from following Jesus wholeheartedly? Hebrews 12:1 tells us to lay aside every weight hindering and entangling us in order to finish the race and fulfill God’s purpose. What are you worrying about? What has caught the attention of your heart?
Give God your heart. Learn to trust Him daily and worship Him through His Word.
Don’t let the distractions and lusts of this world lure you away from the path God has prepared for you. Focus on God. Focus on your assignment. Let us be the ones who stand for Truth and let God’s glorious power touch our lives.
When the church is committed to holy living, the Lord pours out His grace and sends His Spirit to strengthen us.
