“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
John 6:35 NIV
Jesus is the end of our search for fulfillment— there is nothing better.
When Moses led the Israelites from their slavery in Egypt, God fed them with manna from heaven along the way. Moses was very clear that “no one is to keep any of it until morning— however, some of them paid no attention to Moses, they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell.” (Ex 16:19-20)
Why? — God wanted His people to see His glory and to remember that He was working on their behalf. (Ex 16:32) Every morning they awakened to evidence of God’s generosity. ‘The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed. (Ex 16:15-18)
Jump to John 6:10-15 where we encounter the miracle of Jesus feeding the five thousand — after the people were fed, there were 12 baskets left over for his 12 disciples, they all ate and were satisfied.
He is our compassionate provider. Walking with Jesus daily means there will always be just enough. There’s a basket for you today and there will be a basket for you tomorrow. It might not always be everything we think we need. But we can trust He knows what we need. “My God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Phil 4:19)
For Jesus, eating is believing — he didn’t come to give us bread, but to be bread. He didn’t come to assist us in meeting our own desires but to become our main desire. (John 6:29)
Approach Him with confidence believing that delighting in Him is not keeping, stalling or preventing you from getting your work done. This is the work. This is the most important thing you will do today.
Christ died in our place, he lived a life of perfect righteousness and is freely available to everyone who will stop, be still, and abide in his presence.
Treasuring Him, loving him, following him, living for him, being satisfied in him— this is our purpose.
