contemplate

And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with every increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. “

2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV

As we behold the glory of God, our hearts are moved to joyfully live for Him, no matter the cost.

The purpose of the new covenant is that it renews us completely (2 Cor 5:17). The old covenant law was good but did not have the power to change our hearts. Through faith in Christ, the veil was removed from our eyes and the indwelling Spirit became the law written on our hearts empowering us to live for God (2 Cor 3:16-17).
Therefore, our transformation is completely dependent on our time spent with God, for it comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. Only the Holy Spirit can transfigure our new nature day by day into the image and likeness of Jesus.

A right beholding is to “carefully study,” or “contemplate.” It is to learn and ruminate on the words of Jesus. It is to adopt His ways and His habits as revealed in Scripture, into our lives (Mt 11:29). When we spend time beholding His love, grace, peace, and righteousness, our lives gradually become brighter and more beautiful.

Maybe you’re going through a heavy trial, battling temptation or stuck in a lukewarm rut. Maybe you’re carrying immense guilt and shame, doubting God’s love for you. Whatever the struggle may be know this: Jesus loves you and can bring powerful healing and change to your life.

Turn your eyes upon Him. Trust in the Son of God who gave Himself up for you (Gal 2:20). Renewal takes time, but if you continue to place Christ above all else, you will grow closer to Him. If you will be diligent to seek Christ in the Word and prayer, if you will make that your goal, He will become your greatest desire.

reflect:

Prayerfully meditate on a verse describing Jesus this week (John 1:1-5, Philippians 2:5-11, Isaiah 53:2-6, Romans 5:8). Contemplate what He did in order to demonstrate His love for you. How does this truth change your desires, motivations and affections?
