“And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper."
1 Kings 19:11-12 ESV
When all feels lost and upside down, we need a fresh encounter with the presence of God.
At this point in the text, Elijah had tirelessly been addressing the pagan worship running rampant within the people of God. He was exhausted, running for his life, and ready to give up. “I’ve had enough, Lord” (V.4b).
Sound familiar? Have you ever just had enough?
Much like Elijah, we all have times when we reach our limit. We either want to give up or can easily fall into the trap of taking matters into our own hands.
But God knows the cure-all is a personal encounter; to still our soul and experience His presence.
Like Elijah, how many of us are looking for God through mighty and dramatic ways? It wasn’t until the wind, the earthquake, and the fire subsided Elijah heard the gentle and lowly voice of God.
Oftentimes, when it seems like nothing is happening, the greatest things are happening. And the truth is, we need to hear God speaking directly to our human hearts more than dramatic displays of power.
God in his grace is always using something to teach us a deeper truth about who He is. While we may not understand why certain things are happening in our lives, let us humble ourselves to hear his holy whisper and follow his gentle leading.
With love,
Makenzi

What deeper truth might God be trying to teach you about who He is right now?

LORD, give me ears to hear you and a heart to obey you, in Jesus’ name. amen.
