rejoice

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say rejoice…do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:4-7 ESV

Don’t worry. Just pray.

Joy is a decision. It's when we decide in our hearts that no matter how difficult things become we will choose to be joyful. Joy does not mean we are happy all the time, for there is a time for grief and sadness (Ro 12:15), however, joy is a decision to remember God’s goodness and place our faith in the truth that the trial we face has purpose.

In choosing joy, Paul exhorts us to proactively bring all our concerns to God, for He is near. He is omnipresent, omniscient, and he cares for us deeply. He is on our side! Worrying accomplishes nothing and demonstrates a lack of faith. It says we don’t believe in God’s ability to provide for our needs.

Instead of worrying, pray about everything. That’s right, everything! Pray about your job, your family, and any decisions you are anxious to make. Talk to God throughout the day. Ask Him for wisdom. Do this with thanksgiving, turning your attention once again to the goodness of God, trusting He desires what is best for you (Ro 8:28).

Then the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding will flow into your heart and bring you rest.  This peace is our protection. It keeps us from making any impulsive decisions. It guards our mouths from complaining and protects our hearts from fear and anxiety.

Perhaps you haven’t responded well to your current circumstances lately. Will you choose today to be joyful, friend? God is not far off. He is available to you every moment of every day and he has a plan for what you’re going through.

reflect:

Do you see trials as opportunities to become more like Christ? Are you allowing your current circumstances to draw you closer to God or drive you away? How might this posture presented by Paul incline others to see the hope that you have?
