“Count it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have it’s full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

James 1:2-4 ESV

Though our faith be tested, we are never without hope.

‘Count it all joy,’ is probably the last thing we want to hear in the middle of a difficult season. Trials are certainly not enjoyable. Yet, James exhorts us to be joyful during trials, why? Suffering and adversity lead to deeper joy with God. It’s where He weans us from the world, and reminds us where our help comes from (Ps 121).

James encourages us to ‘count it all joy’ because our suffering produces in us greater character all to the glory of God.

Consider the life of King David, who truly had a heart after God. David served a king (Saul) who consistently tried to kill him, chased him out of the only life he knew, all the while carrying a promise from the LORD to be Israel’s future king. How does one remain steadfast when it seems like all is working against him?

He remained faithful to the Lord despite his circumstances.

David loved God and lived for him more than he lived for himself. And when he was finally presented with an opportunity to get even, he resists the temptation to kill King Saul, demonstrating the endurance and patience his trials had produced! He hadn’t spent his time of testing storing up bitterness and anger in his heart. He trusted and believed God would fulfill his promise in his own timing and righteous way (1 Samuel 24:6-7).

God is not surprised by trials. He uses them. Times of testing make us better. They mature us, making us complete, lacking in nothing. If you are going through a difficult season, rejoice knowing that Christ is with you, upholding you and is committed to seeing you conform more and more into his image each and every day.
