“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
Psalms 23:4 NIV
In becoming people of righteousness, we have to walk through the dark valleys.
In other words, adversity builds character. Courage, patience, compassion, generosity—these are not given at the snap of a finger, rather they are responses to hardship. Would compassion develop in a world without struggle? Would we grow in patience if everything happened in our exact timing?
God uses the valleys to strengthen our integrity.
At times it appears God has taken the year off, perhaps fallen asleep and abandoned us entirely. But let us remain encouraged. God is here. He’s never left. His staff is a comfort to us, leading us beside still waters and providing a place of rest. His rod protects us, defending us against our enemies and pulling us out of dangerous situations.
As children of God, we can take a deep breath and trust Him through the disappointment and distress.
There is no need to fear, for God has prepared for us a table, fully covered by His authority (Ps 23:5). It may not always feel like you are sitting at the King’s table. It may not always feel like you are being protected and guided.
You may be looking around today thinking, “Well if this is true, then why is this happening to me?”
Rest assured, beloved, God is constantly with you. His goodness and mercy will continue to follow you all the days of your life.
As we faithfully follow the Good Shepherd, His light floods the darkness transforming our trials into a pathway of peace.
