run

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV

Our stamina increases when we know what we’re running towards.

Life is full of challenges that are beyond our control. Sometimes those challenges hit us so hard we start to lose focus. Our energy decreases, apathy sets in and we begin to become passive about the things of God. Yet, it is God’s will for every believer to continue growing in knowledge and grace and reach new heights of holiness, strength and wisdom.

The Christian life is a marathon. While we’re all running at different paces, the point is to keep moving. We are being given a kingdom that is unshakeable (He 12:28), therefore, let us lay aside every unnecessary weight that so easily entangles our hearts and persevere with endurance so that we can finish the race God has called us to run.

This is our call to endure! Don’t lose hope! Don’t drift. Don’t become sluggish, but remember those who have gone before you, those who didn’t give up (He 6:12). Though they weren’t perfect, their lives demonstrate the possibility of being faithful to God even when things are hard. (Hebrews 11 really lays the foundation for this passage so if you have time this morning, go back and read through).

And above all, we fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. He lived out the perfect example of faithfulness to God despite those who doubted him, mocked him and eventually killed him. Why did he keep going? According to this verse it was the joy that was set before him. Knowing that we were going to be forgiven and completely reconciled to God infused him with stamina to finish the mission.

Be encouraged, friend. Set your entire heart on the path of righteousness. Lift your drooping hands, strengthen your weak knees and run the race set before you with everything you’ve got (He 12:12).

reflect:

Consider Hebrews 12:3 which says, ‘Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.’ Is there anything you know God is calling you to do but perhaps you are growing weary or losing hope about it? Any ‘weight’ that in itself isn’t wrong, but perhaps isn’t helping you run your race for Jesus? Seek the Lord and He will guide you.
